From April 1st, changes to the way Housing Benefit is worked out may mean you have to pay more rent.
Someone who lives with you who is aged 18 or over, and who it not a joint tenant, boarder, and is not your partner, is called a non-dependant. This could be a parent, a friend, another relative who lives with you, or a grown up daughter or son.
If you have a non-dependant living in your home, your Housing Benefit is usually reduced by a certain amount each week. This is called a non-dependant deduction, and means that you have some rent to pay each week.
From 4th April 2011, these deductions will increase. Leeds Benefit Service will have written to you to tell you what the new deduction will be, but you can check the new amount by viewing the leaflet available on the right hand side of our page
